River Barn House | Kyle Porter Architects

Nestled among the golden hues of Te Mata Peak in Te Matau a Māui/Hawke’s Bay, this barn-like home by Kyle Porter Architects embraces its environment with minimalist character and a palette of robust natural materials. At the entrance, our Large Rod Pull 1.7m, sand-cast in solid bronze, anchors the joinery, an invitation into a home where materiality and landscape are held in balance.

The interior continues this dialogue between craft and context. Bronze hardware sits alongside cedar timber and expansive glazing, creating a balance of solidity and lightness. Each touchpoint is designed not only for function but also for ritual, the moment a front entrance handle is grasped becomes part of the daily rhythm of living within the house, the first introduction to the architecture. Over time, the bronze will register these moments, its surface shifting in tone and depth, quietly recording the interaction between people and place.
